We all hate spam. It’s the bane of copywriters, and indeed everyone everywhere – and it’s chock full of bad copywriting and grammar mistakes.
Everyone hates it. It’s nothing new – we all get the package of leaflets from local supermarkets, freelance builders/plumbers/etc and donation bags through our doors. In fact, I’m close to nailing the damn letterbox shut, just to stop getting this crap. However, I got an email, a sales email…from someone I didn’t know.
Dun Dun Dunnnnn.
And guess what? I opened the damn thing.
“What?! Ben, are you crazy?! Why??”
How the hell do I know? I didn’t know what I was doing – I’m just a copywriter. The headline grabbed me, and the rest was history. Now, it didn’t make me buy anything, but my ears pricked up. I read, and paid attention. To be perfectly honest, the copywriting wasn’t even that good. In fact, I sent the guy an email saying how he could improve his copywriting. But it DID get me to open it. Here it is, in its entirety:
I APPRECIATE YOU…
I appreciate you taking the time to open this email when you don’t even know me.

*Most people need more money in their life.
*Most people are not afraid of hard work when they know there is a payoff at the end of that hard work.
*There is definitely enough money circulating in the world to provide for everyone’s needs.
The question then becomes…How do we attract that money from where it is, to where we want it to be? That would be in our bank accounts and in our pockets.

Yes, he appreciates me. I dunno, maybe I had a brief moment of loneliness. Just kidding. What he DID right, is he caught my attention in a few ways:
1.) No obvious spam subject line.
2.) A personal email address (not something obviously business related).
3.) A personal sounding introduction
Then right away, you’re grabbed by his truths. Yeah, we DO want more money. And yeah, I want you to tell me how to get it. It’s intriguing. I mean, he’s already gotten me to listen. Plus, I kinda like the guy now – he appreciates me! He’s friendly, is what I’m trying to say.
I sent him an email back, with a few tips (remove the bolding for a start), and though I wasn’t interested in buying anything, and the fact that the copy was by most standards not all that great – I opened the email. I read it. I considered it.
That’s the goal of an email. Sure, he didn’t get a sale from me. But for a cold email (with bad copywriting) to stop me and make me read it? Yeah, I’m impressed.
